After 50, consistency matters more than having access to every machine in a commercial gym. The drive, the crowds, the weather — they all become reasons to skip. I know, because I’ve been there.
These days I work out at home like a lot of men over 50, and honestly it’s been a game changer. Finish the workout, walk to my own shower, land on my own couch. No commute, no crowd, no excuses.
The good news is you don’t need much to make it work. A few simple pieces of equipment and you can build real strength, improve mobility, and stay active well into your 80s.

Why a Home Gym Works After 50
Let’s be honest. Even if we no longer work, or if work is slowing down for us, we still don’t have time to be driving back and forth to the gym every day. Let’s say it takes you 15 minutes to drive to your gym. That’s 30 minutes of drive time you have spent just getting there and getting back. I’m not even going to mention the weather.
I know that sometimes when I work out, I just “don’t have it that day.” If I work out at home, I have no problem picking up LadyFish’s 5 lb dumbbells. I might feel a little peer pressure if I was at a busy public gym.
I get it, some of you guys are social creatures and love hanging out with people while you work out. Some of you also love to take a sneak peek at the Pilates instructor in the Group Fitness Class. There is nothing at all wrong with working out at the gym, but just remember, that’s not the only way to do it.
The Best Home Gym Equipment for Men Over 50
Many people (me included) devote an entire room to workout equipment. I’ll post at some point about the equipment that I use. However, it is possible to store all of the equipment you really need under your bed. All you really need are dumbbells, resistance bands, and a workout mat. Here’s why each one earns its place.
Adjustable Dumbbells
I will admit that they are a little expensive, but they are very easy to use and very high quality. I really like how easy it is to switch from a 5 lb dumbbell to a 52.5 lb dumbbell in seconds. You don’t have to buy an entire rack of dumbbells to have a variable weight workout.
Resistance Bands
Resistance bands are a must have as well. Especially for us who are a little older and are not as flexible as we used to be. I like a set that has 5 different bands of varying resistance. These are very high quality and durable. Resistance bands are great for warm ups as well as using for your actual strength workout. One of the greatest things about resistance bands is that they take up no space at all.
Workout Mat
I would also recommend having a workout mat. Whether you are working out on carpet, tile, or wood floors, you should have a mat. They provide a little bit of cushion for our backs and joints. Another big benefit is that you keep the sweat off of your floors. I’m a big sweater, so this is important to me. They are affordable, roll up nicely, and are easily stored out of the way.

A Simple Home Workout Routine for Men Over 50
I’m not a trainer or a doctor — just sharing what has worked for me.
Warm-Up (3 Minutes — Don’t Skip)
- March in place
- Arm circles
- Bodyweight squats
- Light stretching
Main Workout — 2 Rounds
1. Goblet Squats Hold one dumbbell at chest level and sit back into a squat. Keep your chest up and go as low as comfortable.
2. Standing Resistance Band Rows Anchor the band to a door or sturdy object and pull toward your torso. Focus on squeezing your shoulder blades and using slow, controlled movement.
3. Dumbbell Chest Press Lie on your mat and press the dumbbells upward. Control the weights on the way down — don’t rush.
4. Resistance Band Deadlifts Stand on the band and pull upward like a deadlift. Hinge at the hips, not the lower back, and keep your back straight throughout.
5. Plank Hold a plank position for as long as comfortable. Drop to your knees if needed — no shame in it.
Take a 1-minute rest between rounds.
Cool Down (2–3 Minutes)
- Hamstring stretch
- Shoulder stretch
- Deep breathing
Doing this simple workout and using these simple pieces of equipment can prepare our bodies for the next chapter of our lives. As I’ve said at other times, I’m not trying to be on the cover of Men’s Health, nor am I trying to catch the eyes of the aforementioned Pilates instructor. Those days are long past me – come to think of it, I don’t think I ever caught the eye of a Pilates instructor. Regardless, our intent is to be healthy and active. As the great philosopher Dory said in Finding Nemo – “Just keep swimming…”
